Roads and parking spaces in the centre of Vienna have been transformed into a pedestrian zone with trees and flower beds
A street which used to be a road with parking for cars is now a pedestrian zone with trees and flower beds full of plants. This is thanks to the green deputy mayor of Vienna, Ms Birgit Hebein, who wants to use various measures to cool the city's hot streets and create a more pleasant place to live.
Until 2018, there were parking spaces and a road on Otto-Bauer-Gasse in the centre of Vienna with only limited space for pedestrians, let alone greenery. In 2019, the town hall made a pedestrian zone here, established flower beds and planted trees. This year, passers-by can enjoy the rich flowering flower beds and trees, which are doing very well thanks to the integrated irrigation system. Now this greenery helps retain water and creates a more pleasant climate during hot summer days.
A similar project is currently being prepared in Vienna for planting of 19 new trees, including an irrigation system in Kandlgasse, which will take place in the autumn.
