City greenery – no mowing, raking or snow clearing?
Szczecin is one of the first cities in Poland, which partially stopped mowing parks and squares. Last year, the operation was completely abandoned. Nowadays, city maintenance services decided to take one step further. They skip the rake and leave the leaves for the healthier, greener yard.
Mulching the ground with leaves helps to feed the soil. Therefore, leaves raking will be kept to a minimum and will take place only in emergencies. Moreover, the city decided to abandon snow removal in the alleys. The snow will remain there so it can feed the soil by water. Stopping all this work will help not only the hedgehogs but also insects to survive the winter.

There is one reason for all of that – to protect the city's natural resources by maintaining these areas as sustainable green areas. Due to that, city parks can serve as a recreation area. Moreover, they help to establish the importance of extensive greenery in the city structure.
Szczecin is the capital and largest city on the west side of the Polish seaside with more than 400 thousand citizens.
