How to Keep Safe During the Heat Waves: Recommendations not Only for the Elderly
Every year, the number of summer heat waves posing a great health hazard, grows. We are all at risk, but the risk is higher for the elderly and people with preexisting medical conditions. However, we can protect ourselves. Just follow a few principles.
Best Ways to Protect Yourselves
1. Drink plenty of water. Always carry a bottle of water with you when leaving the house.
2. Take a cool shower or bath to cool down. The water should not be too cold to avoid sudden cooling of the body.
3. Wear lightweight clothing in light colours. Don't forget to wear a light hat. Don't be ashamed to take a parasol to have some shade.
4. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. It is much more difficult for your body to deal with the heat when you are doing physically demanding work.
5. Make sure you have enough medications you take regularly to reduce having to go outdoors.
6. Have a charged phone with you with important phone numbers (family, doctor, ambulance) easy enough to dial.
7. Keep an eye on yourself, look for symptoms such as overheated or dry skin, loss of orientation, hallucinations, aggression, fatigue. If necessary, do not hesitate to ask for help or call emergency!
8. Keep in touch with your loved ones, support your peers. Do not forget to cool your pets too.

9. Ventilate your apartment in the early morning hours while it is still cold outside.
10. In the morning, before the air starts to heat up, close all your windows so that you do not get heat from the outside.
11. Get external shading for your windows and other glazed areas - even if it is just a temporary solution. It is important to have the shading outside so that the sunrays cannot get inside and turn into heat.
12. Get shading of the facade, including loggias and balconies - so that the overheated facade does not heat the air we want to use to cool in the evening.
13. Make sure the air in the room is moving. The body tolerates heat better in a gentle breeze that wicks sweat away from the body. A fan that blows the air will help.
14. If your home is too hot during the day, plan staying in a cool public building (library, shopping mall, church, etc.).
